Apollo is one of the strongest of the Mythos Cyborgs, appearing in Cyborg 009 BGOOParts Delete. In a sense, he is a continuation of the Apollo from the original manga, but has newly-crafted settings and can be seen as a "what if" sequel and alternate universe take on that character.
Appearance[]
As with the original manga, Apollo is usually dressed in a white Greek chiton and cloak, and has golden arm and wristbands in addition to gladiator sandals.
In a difference to his classic appearance, Apollo's flaming hair can also seen to be "turned off" at times in battle, where it is revealed to be merely blond and spiked in a swept-up style when not using his powers. Otherwise, he would seem to resemble an ordinary, pale young man with red eyes.
Personality[]
Just as Apollo had been in the old days, he is still full of pride about his abilities and willing to fight for the rematch against the 00 Cyborgs, although he is initially confused at being alive and was certain he and the rest of his team had perished.
As the battles rage on, Apollo tires of Dr. Gaia using him as a mere tool and having to constantly be injured or die in terrible ways only for Gaia to restore him. This leads to him taking the initiative to decide this rematch will truly be a final battle, by destroying the "Zeus System" pods that Gaia was using to regenerate the team. Over time, he is also more willing to work with 009, to try to stop Gaia's out of control god complex.
Apollo also provides exposition to 009 when it comes to others like his sister, ensuring that readers wind up also knowing new facts that were never known before (like that Helena is truly Artemis, and does have her own abilities).
Relationships[]
009/Joe Shimamura[]
Apollo is eager to fight against 009 again, even wishing Achilles would stand down so he could do so. Ultimately, while the two have a tough fight as before, this first attempt at a rematch ends when 009 shoots Apollo full of holes with his Super Gun.
Achilles[]
Achilles and Apollo butt heads over who gets to have their rematch with 009. Ultimately, both wind up battling Joe but both get defeated by him.
Helena[]
Apollo's older twin sister. While the two don't get to directly interact in the battles, due to Helena taking the Super Dolphin hostage, he relays what her powers are to 009 as well as the fact that she truly represents the goddess Artemis. It was in fact one of her special abilities that she used to counter Apollo in his battle against 009 before, freezing him in place (while burning herself) to disable his own powers.
Ultimately, Helena is heartbroken in seeing that her brother died from Gaia's guard robots, and tries but fails to avenge him.
Abilities[]
Like his classic self, Apollo has high-intensity heat generation. This is usually manifested through his flaming hair or him raising his body temperature, though he also fires heat beams as before.
History[]
In 1967, a coup in Greece's government intensified the long-running tensions in the country. Two scientists of the Black Ghost organization approached a group of impoverished citizens, including a pair of siblings, and offered for them to take revenge on the upper classes that had oppressed them by becoming "Gods". The people accepted, and were remodeled into the Mythos Cyborgs of Black Ghost. The brother of the two siblings would become known as Apollo, while his sister would appear to be "Helena" but in fact truly be representing the classic Apollo's sister Artemis.
The Mythos Cyborgs would challenge the 00 Cyborgs to a showdown on Magma, which culminated in Apollo and his sister falling into lava after she tackled him to save 009. After the island was destroyed and sunk, the 00 Cyborgs were left believing the Mythos team had died but could never find any traces. In actuality, Dr. Gaia had Hera teleport all her wounded or deceased comrades to a secret underwater laboratory he had designed, the fallen Apollo among them. Gaia would utilize a technology known as his Zeus System in order to restore his creations and keep them in stasis, awaiting the day he could bring them out again.
50 years later, Apollo would wake back up, being informed by his sister that they were brought back to rule the world once more. But they were soon alerted to the presence of the 00 Cyborgs, who happened to be a team from a parallel world that had come to extinguish any remaining traces of "Black Ghost" activity and counterparts in other worlds. This would trigger a rematch, with the 00 Cyborgs' objective being to defeat the Mythos for good while the Mythos Cyborgs hoped they would be able to prove their strength and truly win as Gods.
Eventually, the two teams wound up having to work together against Gaia and his killer guard robots Athena and Ares, but Apollo would die in battle from the robots opening fire on him. His sister would soon fall due to Gaia's Zeus form, and the rest of his team had been disintegrated. 009 would briefly mourn Apollo, before laying him to rest and continuing the battle.
A twisted form of Apollo would last be seen as part of Gaia/Zeus' "Chimera" he had transformed into, which contained the essence and powers of his various creations, but would be defeated by 009.
Trivia[]
- Tsuguo Okazaki, to his regret, would state that there were meant to be further layers to the origins of Apollo and his teammates that his editor had forbade him from including in the text. One detail he found most important was that the citizens Gaia and Uranus had rallied and convinced to become cyborgs were the survivors of Greece's Jewish population and their descendants who had continued to be oppressed in the country. Apollo and Helena in particular would have been forced to face such indignities such as having to sell their bodies to get by, and being treated as subhuman. This would lead to the boy that would become Apollo being so driven and willing to become a "God" like that of Greek mythology.
